Spasticity and impaired selective voluntary motor control (SVMC – also known as “abnormal synergy”), are very common “positive signs” of the upper motor neuron syndrome that can be difficult to tease out and treat appropriately. This course has been designed for all PT clinicians in all settings, but particularly supporting students, new PTs, and those who are either new to neurorehab or would like a refresher. We will review how spasticity and abnormal synergy contribute to movement challenges seen in patients with upper motor neuron syndrome (stroke, brain injury, spinal cord injury, multiple sclerosis). We will discuss movement analysis, assessment techniques, and treatment approaches to maximize functional outcomes. Recent research literature will be presented, including a newly developed approach for assessing abnormal synergy. The participants will be engaged in the learning process through a video case example and reflection questions that emphasize practical application of the material presented. By honing our skills in assessing and treating these common impairments, we can elevate our practice and help our patients achieve better mobility and engagement in life.
